Streets of Berlin: Wörther Straße

Located in the middle of Prenzlauerberg – one of Berlin’s hippest neighbourhoods – Wörther Straße is easy to find, and offers a variety of diversions, yet does not usually get overly crowded. The street’s name harks back to the Franco-Prussian war (1870-71), during which the French town of Wörth briefly belonged to the Germans. It is squeezed in between Prenzlauerberg’s two main traffic arteries Schonhauserallee and Prenlauzerallee. On one end it borders on a Jewish cemetery. A bit further down, there is the triangular Kollwitzplatz, named in commemoration of Käthe Kollwitz, the printmaker and sculptor. Her main subject was depictions of the anguish of loss resulting from the horrors of war. Some of her most well-known prints are those of parents mourning children, a theme that came from the personal experience of having lost her son in the course of the First World War.
A statue of her in the Kollwitzplatz is made in a style similar to her own work, with sharp lines that simultaneously exude a perennial human suffering.
On Thursday and Saturday there is an ecological market in and around the little park where the environmentally-conscious Prenz’lbergers go to buy their bio-vegetables and homemade lollies.

Another of Worther Strasse’s highlight is at the Prenzlaurallee end; the wonderful St. George’s English bookstore. As they advertise on their website it is a cozy place to peruse books in comfortable leather Chesterfield sofas. As might be expected, they carry a large selection of books about Berlin, both fiction and non-fiction (e.g. Doblin’s Berlin-Alexanderplatz, Peter Gay’s The Weimar Republic). Particularly in their new-books shelves one finds a noticeably large selection of leftist theory and philosophy, with the Frankfurt school being well-represented by Adorno and Benjamin.

There is a bus station right in front of the house that takes you to the Hauptbahnhof (main train station) in only 8 minutes!

My flatmate is living in the other room so you will be sharing bathroom and the spacious kitchen.
But she works out of town a lot so it could be that you have the whole apartment for yourself!

I have two spare bedrooms in my super apartment which is available for visitors to Berlin. They both have wonderful outlooks, and have sunlight streaming in the morning. My building is in PrenzlauerBerg’s most beautiful areas – Worther Strasse, just off Kollwitz Platz. Every Thursday and Saturday you can step outside and explore the wonderful Kollwitz Platz markets where you can find bio-goodies galore, locally designed jewelry and clothes, and all sorts of great things to taste and buy. Down the road from me is Europe’s biggest (two-storey) bio-store, and the U2 train station Senefelder Platz.

My apartment has a fully equipped kitchen which you are very welcome to use. The bathroom has a lovely big bathtub, and is clean and modern. It’s quite a hike up the stairs, but the openness and brightness of the entire apartment makes the climb worthwhile!

Come and stay at my place in Worther Strasse, and be based in the best part Prenzlauer Berg, which is undoubtedly the best part of East Berlin! Everything is close by (including a great bike-hire place), and you’ll be impressed by the choice and range of cafes, restaurants, cool boutiques and late night drinking holes.
